FAQ

What exactly is Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) and is it safe for kids and adults?

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a martial art focused on grappling, ground control, technique, and leverage rather than striking. Our approach is always safety-first: classes are structured by age and skill level, instructors supervise closely, and we emphasize technique over force. Whether you’re 5 or 50, we make sure your experience is fun, controlled, and safe.

Do I need any experience or fitness level to join?

Not at all. Many of our members start with zero martial arts experience. We design beginner-friendly BJJ classes so you can learn slowly, build confidence, and grow stronger over time. Our classes accommodate all fitness levels — your journey is your own.

What age groups do you accept and do you have programs for kids?

We welcome children as young as 4 up through adults. We have dedicated kids BJJ classes, youth classes, and adult classes, each with age-appropriate instruction, drills, and progression. It’s a great activity for kids to build discipline, respect, and confidence — while having fun!

What should I bring to my first class? Do I need a gi or special uniform?

Come comfortable, in athletic clothes (t-shirt and shorts or sweatpants).Once you decide to continue, you can purchase your own gi from us, we will make sure it’s the perfect fit.. Also bring a water bottle, and an open mindset. We’ll take care of the rest.

How often should I attend to see progress?

Consistency is key in BJJ. Many students train 2–3 times per week and see steady improvement in technique, stamina, and confidence. Even attending once a week helps — but the more consistent you are, the faster you’ll grow. Our instructors help you set realistic goals based on your schedule.

Is there a trial class or free intro class?

Yes! We offer a free intro private class so you can try BJJ class, meet the instructors, and see if it’s a good fit — no obligation. We offer the one on one session so you can really feel jiujitsu and not feel overwhelmed in a group setting. We will be able to help set context and allow you to feel how easy it is to perform the moves.

How much does it cost and what are your membership options?

We have a few membership plans. Pricing depends on age group and number of classes per week. Contact us and we will send you our latest price list.

What are the benefits of doing BJJ (for kids and adults)?

BJJ offers more than fitness. Physically, it builds strength, coordination, flexibility, cardio fitness. Mentally, it fosters problem-solving, discipline, confidence, focus, stress relief, and resilience. For kids, it also nurtures respect, teamwork, self-esteem, and social connection. Many adults say it helps them feel stronger mentally and physically in daily life.

What safety measures do you have (injury prevention, hygiene, etc.)

Safety is a top priority. Our mats are cleaned regularly, we enforce hygiene rules (clean uniforms, trimmed nails, sanitized gear), and instructors closely supervise rolling. Beginners always roll with partners matched by skill. We teach safe techniques to avoid injury. Our policy: no one gets hurt — have fun.

How do I enrol or book my first class?

It’s easy — just fill out our Book Free Class form on our website or contact us via phone/email. We’ll schedule your free private intro class, answer any questions, and get you started. We want to make your first step as smooth as possible.

Where are you located and what are your class hours?

We are located at 990 Innisfil Beach Rd 2nd Floor, Innisfil, ON. You can see the full schedule on the Classes page. We also serve people in Barrie, Bradford and surrounding communities.

What’s your teaching philosophy or what makes Innisfil Brazilian Jiujitsu unique?

We believe that martial arts should be welcoming, fun, and supportive. We don’t use intimidation or harsh drills. We focus on fun. We tailor instruction to each student’s pace. We focus not just on technique, but on building community, confidence, friendships, and character. Our studio is warm, inviting, and designed so everyone — kids, beginners, adults — feels at home.

Can parents stay / watch the class?

No, when parents are present, kids are distracted. Parents are often on their phones, or giving unsolicited feedback without any experience. It is better to allow the coaches to do their jobs and you will be contacted about their progress or if they need extra support.
