The Story of Innisfil Brazilian Jiu Jitsu

Innisfil Brazilian Jiujitsu was founded by Coach PK in 2019 with the aim of giving kids in the local communities around Innisfil and Barrie the opportunity to learn Brazilian jiu jitsu (BJJ) – a discipline that’s the perfect combination of exercise and play.

Since it began, IBJJ has helped kids and adults alike discover their inner grappler, while having fun and making friends along the way. Our studio prides itself on its warm, inviting and friendly atmosphere. We’re not just a club or a team, we’re a family. And like any family, we have a few house rules:

#1 No one gets hurt
#2 Have fun!

If you’re ready to learn the art of folding clothes while the people are still inside of them (also known as aggressive pyjama cuddling), book your first free class today!

Meet Coach PK

Coach PK (Pirashanth Kesavan)

Coach PK took up karate as a kid after being inspired by the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Power Rangers.

His passion for all things martial arts has only grown with time and he’s now an experienced trainer who has put his students through their paces in a range of disciplines including Muay Thai, kickboxing, Jeet Kune Do, and Mixed Martial Arts (MMA).

Coach PK fell in love with Brazilian jiujitsu when he saw its effectiveness over a larger and more powerful opponent and the rest, as they say, is history. He has trained for fourteen years under black belt Coach Jason Lancucki of Straight Blast Gym Toronto, where he was awarded his brown belt, and ran a successful kids’ program before relocating to Innisfil.

Coach PK makes martial arts fun, removing the structured rigidity of traditional classes in favour of an easily-digestible, playful way of training that keeps people coming back for more. His goal is to make Brazilian jiujitsu accessible to everyone, regardless of age, gender, athleticism or disability.

Coach PK shares the benefits of Brazilian jiujitsu by fostering critical thinking in his classes, teaching meditation for focus and reflection, and practicing remaining calm in disadvantageous positions. Students leave class feeling refreshed and invigorated. A healthy mind body balance is the cornerstone of enjoyable exercise at IBJJ.

When he’s not teaching class, Coach PK loves practicing jiujitsu with his family, traveling, and searching for the world’s best pizza (deep down inside he still thinks he’s a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle).

Preparing for class – what to know before you hit the mat

We’re all about safety and creating an enjoyable experience for our students so there are a few rules to be aware of before you attend your first class. BJJ is a close sport, involving a lot of contact, so hygiene is very important.

Please make sure your nails are clipped (fingers and toes as we train barefoot!) and you’ve bathed recently – that means applying deodorant, checking that your breath is fresh, and your hair is clean.

If you’re not feeling well or have any open wounds, stay home! We’re always happy to reschedule a session or fit you into a later class if needed.

On your first visit, we’ll spend a few moments showing you around the facility before getting started on the mat. There’s no food allowed in the gym, but we recommend students bring their own water bottle.

Do I need a gi (uniform)?

You can wear your own clothing for your first session – we recommend comfortable workout wear and ask that you remove any jewelry and avoid items with zippers and/or buttons as these can injure other students.

For subsequent classes, all students must wear the traditional BJJ uniform, known as a gi. These can be purchased from our gym, and every gi is individually fitted for each student so it’s a perfect fit.

Do I need to bring any equipment to class?

We’ll provide everything you need at the gym. Just bring some excitement and a ready-for-anything attitude!

Do I need any experience in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu or another martial art?

No! It doesn’t matter if you’re hearing about BJJ for the first time, or a veteran of the sport – we welcome all abilities and experience levels.
